365 Questions--March 5

What is your favorite song lyric?

Don't ever forget the moment you began to doubt
Transitioning from fitting in to standing out
--Drake (Say What's Real)

This is from Drake's So Far Gone mixtape from like 10 years ago (yes I'm an old Drake fan). Honestly, this line is part of growing up. The hardest thing for me to do was to not care what people think. When I was in college and beginning with ministry, I didn't care what people had to say about me, but when I went from going out and going to church to just church I became very self-conscious. I didn't feel good enough to avoid the judgment of the church, but I knew I was nowhere near where I used to be either. I just wasn't sure where I fit in.

I've never been one to have a lot of people around me. That hasn't always been by choice. I'm a little awkward. I'm shy and I sometimes don't really know how to hold a conversation wth people without feeling extremely uncomfortable. There were times I really wanted to have a bunch of friends. The problem was I just did not fit in. I tried dressing like everybody else and do what everybody else was doing, and it never felt right. It took me forever to be comfortable with what I looked like, who I was, and what I was called to do. I wasn't made to just be a carbon copy of everybody. I was created to stand out.

And they think they can market you however they decide to
Nah, before they told me to 'do me'
And don't listen to anybody that knew me
Cause to have known me, would mean that there's a new me
And if you think I changed in the slightest could have fooled me
